Islamabad, President Dr. Arif Alvi highlighted the urgent need for Pakistan to adopt more efficient water practices in agriculture, such as drip and spray irrigation systems, to counter the impending water scarcity.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, President Alvi, in his address via video link to an international conference on ‘Transformative pathways for water and food systems in a climate resilient Pakistan’ held in Karachi, pointed out that agriculture accounts for about ninety-five percent of the country’s water usage. He emphasized the immediate need for planning and reforms in water use efficiency within this sector.
The President underscored the necessity of effective water resource management and the adoption of modern agricultural technologies. He stressed the importance of research and technological innovation to introduce these technologies at the grassroots level.
Further, President Alvi highlighted the need to educate farmers about water conservation methods, including rain-water harvesting and aquifer technologies. He also mentioned that community involvement and the enforcement of relevant laws are crucial for effective water management in the country.
