Islamabad: Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari emphasized the transparency and flexibility of negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) during a session with international development partners. The meeting focused on the ongoing power sector reforms aimed at making electricity prices more competitive and affordable.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, Leghari assured representatives from organizations including the World Bank, IMF, and UNDP that the government is committed to free and fair dealings in its negotiations with IPPs. He highlighted the government’s right to opt for arbitration or forensic audits if necessary and emphasized the inclusivity of the policy formulation process.

Leghari detailed various reforms implemented by the Power Division, such as transitioning from “Take or Pay” to “Take and Pay” models, eliminating furnace oil-based plants, and converting imported coal to local coal. He also discussed efforts to remove transmission constraints and the planned restructuring of the National Transmission and Despatch Company.

The Minister addressed the elimination of circular debt, setting a target to resolve the issue within five to eight years. He also mentioned plans to rationalize electricity subsidies and duties, along with a rationalization of net metering.

The session concluded with international partners expressing their appreciation for the reforms and pledging their support for the ongoing efforts in Pakistan’s power sector.
