Guwahati: Police employed baton charges at a large rally in Cachar district, Assam, where protesters took to the streets against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, leading to clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.

According to reports from Kashmir Media Service, thousands of individuals gathered in the Berenga area of Silchar town. The protestors brandished black flags and chanted slogans in opposition to the BJP government, calling for the repeal of the newly enacted Waqf Act.

The demonstration, primarily involving members of the minority community, was marked by tensions as participants expressed their discontent with the legislative changes.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously remarked on the existence of a ‘strong intelligence’ report, suggesting potential disturbances during the protests. This anticipation of unrest prompted the police to prepare for maintaining order during the large-scale demonstration.
