Police raid on The Wire editors termed as vendetta

New Delhi, November 03, 2022 (PPI-OT): A number of media groups in India have condemned the raids on the offices and residence of The Wire editors in Mumbai and New Delhi terming them as attack on freedom of expression. Expressing solidarity with The Wire, media groups like Editors Guild of India (EGI), Press Club of India (PCI), Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), Press Association (PA), Working News Cameraman Association (WNCA), Indian Journalist Union (IJU), DIGIPUB News India Foundation and Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) in their statements condemned the raids conducted by the Delhi police in connection with the FIR filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell head Amit Malvya over The Wire’s retracted stories related to Meta.

They termed the raids “excessive and disproportionate”, “smacks of sheer vendetta” and “attack on Freedom of Expression”. They were of the view that “while the media has a responsibility to report and has to be responsible in reporting at all times, the manner in which the Delhi police has acted on the complaint of a BJP spokesperson (Malviya) smacks of sheer vendetta. Such actions have a chilling effect on the rest of the media and impact the freedom of speech as well”.
