PM Shehbaz Sharif Urges Swift Progress on Battery Energy Storage Project

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed relevant authorities to accelerate the development of a Battery Energy Storage System project to enhance the country’s electricity supply infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of solar energy and other renewable sources as the future of the power sector during a meeting focused on long-term electricity planning and export progress amidst current international challenges.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister highlighted that despite disruptions in oil supply due to regional tensions, the country has avoided an energy crisis thanks to the significant contribution of renewable energy in electricity generation. He has called for a comprehensive strategy to further expand renewable energy sources nationally.

Shehbaz Sharif also addressed the continuity of exports to Gulf countries, noting that effective diplomacy ensured ongoing supply despite global tensions. He directed the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to arrange additional ships to boost exports via sea routes.

The meeting revealed that 55% of the country’s electricity is currently generated from renewable sources, with plans to increase this to 90% over the next decade by reducing reliance on fossil fuels to 10%. Additionally, diplomatic efforts are underway to facilitate national exports to Gulf countries amidst regional tensions, with a noted increase in demand for Pakistani agricultural products in these markets.
