ISLAMABAD: The Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research convened on Wednesday to address pressing issues including the potato crop crisis, safety standards for synthetic mango-flavoured beverages, and challenges facing the mango industry. Chaired by Syed Tariq Hussain, MNA, the Committee reviewed export strategies and regulatory measures to safeguard both agricultural production and public health.
According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the meeting began with a focus on the potato crop. The Ministry reported that 101 companies have now been registered with the Russian Federation, enabling enhanced potato exports following the lifting of prior import restrictions. The Committee urged immediate action to export surplus potato stock to ensure fair pricing for farmers. Additionally, the Committee recommended the establishment of a centralized coordination cell to bolster national food security efforts and enhance inter-ministerial collaboration.
The Committee also scrutinized the Ministry’s approach to synthetic mango-flavoured beverages. A consultative report was presented, leading to recommendations for the revision of beverage standards, with emphasis on health implications of artificial sweeteners. Measures include mandatory quarterly testing, stricter labelling, and penalties for non-compliance. The Committee voiced concern over the sale of such beverages in schools and hospitals, citing public health risks.
In addressing the mango industry’s export challenges, the Committee proposed adapting schedules to regional harvest timelines and called for a detailed report on export trends. The participation of industry stakeholders, such as the Multan Mango Growers Association, was deemed critical in shaping effective strategies.
The meeting brought together Committee members, senior officials from relevant ministries, and representatives from provincial food authorities, underscoring a collaborative effort to tackle the multifaceted issues impacting Pakistan’s agriculture and food security landscape.
