Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet Approves Groundbreaking National Space Policy

Islamabad, Pakistan’s Caretaker Federal Cabinet, in a significant development, has approved the country’s first-ever National Space Policy, paving the way for international companies to offer communication and coordination services through Low-Orbit Communication satellites. This policy marks a major milestone in Pakistan’s journey towards advanced space technology and international collaboration in this field.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the policy was announced by Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi during a media briefing in Islamabad. The Federal Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, was also attended by Minister of Information Technology Dr. Umar Saif and Minister for National Health Services Dr. Nadeem Jan.

Minister Solangi highlighted that this policy is expected to attract foreign investment and save foreign exchange currently spent on similar services. He emphasized the establishment of a Space Regulatory regime in Pakistan, aligning with international standards. Additionally, funds have been allocated for research and development in the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

In another significant decision, Solangi informed that the Federal Cabinet postponed the Economic Coordination Committee’s decision to increase medicine prices. The Cabinet has directed a review of the mechanism for price fixation and regulations, seeking a comprehensive and sustainable solution to this issue. Prime Minister Kakar reiterated the government’s commitment to the pharmaceutical industry’s progress and development, emphasizing no compromise on the quality of drugs and public interest.

The Cabinet also consented to refer several medical colleges, including Dow Dental College Karachi and Narowal Medical College, to the Pakistan Medical and Dental College for preliminary approval. Furthermore, measures to support Afghan nationals were discussed, including a reduction in processing fees for evacuation to third countries and an extension of their stay period in Pakistan.

On the international front, the information minister announced the Cabinet’s rejection of the recent verdict by the Indian Supreme Court regarding Kashmir, terming it unlawful and emphasizing that the Kashmir issue should be resolved. UN Security Council resolutions and the Kashmiri people’s will. He urged the international community to condemn India’s actions in suppressing the freedom of the Kashmiri people.

Dr. Umar Saif, responding to a query, mentioned the laying of Fiber Optic from Kashghar to Karachi, which will enhance internet bandwidth and digital connectivity. He also stated that specialized Telecom tribunal courts are planned to address the telecom industry’s cases.
