Pakistan’s Energy Sector Reform: Minister Leghari and ADB’s Yong Ye Collaborate


Islamabad, Minister for Power, Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, engaged in strategic talks with Yong Ye, the Country Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), to discuss enhancing Pakistan’s energy sector through diversification and reform.



According to Press Information Department, the discussions focused on the need for diversifying Pakistan’s energy mix, with Minister Leghari outlining the Power Division’s strategy for more effective policy implementation. Yong Ye committed the ADB’s support for these reforms, including assistance in assembling a specialized team. The ADB, recognizing the need for global expertise, is set to help identify international firms to provide focused guidance for the sector’s overhaul.



Additionally, Minister Leghari addressed environmental concerns, citing the damage caused by hill torrents in Punjab, and underscored the necessity for ADB’s financial involvement in climate change initiatives. In response, Yong Ye assured investment towards both mitigation and adaptation projects in the affected regions.



The meeting also led to the suggestion of appointing a transaction advisor to guide long-term strategies for the development of Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in Pakistan. The ADB expressed support for Pakistan’s National Energy Policy, aiming for its successful execution in line with sustainable energy and economic goals.
