Islamabad: Despite escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, diplomacy is essential to avert a broader regional conflict, according to Sardar Masood Khan, Former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, China, and the United Nations. He emphasized that countries like Pakistan, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt should continue facilitating dialogue to foster de-escalation and a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
According to President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan highlighted in a television interview that the current escalation has become more perilous, with increasing attacks on civilian and critical infrastructure rather than just military targets. This trend, he warned, could exacerbate humanitarian distress, destabilize the Middle East, and harm both regional and global economic stability.
Sardar Masood Khan pointed out Pakistan’s active diplomatic efforts to encourage Tehran and Washington to maintain open channels of communication. He noted that recent discussions with key regional states reflect a collective commitment to preventing further escalation. He also welcomed Iran’s stance that diplomacy and national defense should proceed concurrently, advocating for a similar approach from all parties involved.
Regarding the security situation in the Gulf, Sardar Masood Khan warned that the conflict could extend beyond its current bounds, with potential threats to maritime routes impacting global trade, energy prices, and international economic stability. He called for regional actors to exercise restraint to prevent the conflict from affecting neighboring countries.
On matters related to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan described the decision to conduct phased elections as a sensible approach under the circumstances. He emphasized the importance of democratic continuity, peace, and security in the electoral process, urging that constitutional and political issues be resolved within the Legislative Assembly through democratic procedures.
Addressing political developments in India, Sardar Masood Khan cautioned against expecting immediate shifts in India’s strategic perspective with changes in political parties. He noted that ideological trends rooted in Hindutva have permeated state institutions and society. For sustainable regional peace, he stressed the need for policies grounded in pluralism, democratic values, and respect for minority rights.
