New York: Pakistan has called for the provision of adequate, predictable, and sustainable resources to bolster the efforts of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). The plea was made by Ansar Shah, First Secretary at Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, during the Fourth Committee’s General Debate discussing the effects of atomic radiation.
According to Radio Pakistan, Shah emphasized Pakistan’s extensive experience in managing radiation safety through a comprehensive regulatory framework that aligns with international standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He highlighted the role of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) in monitoring radiation exposure in cancer treatment facilities and evaluating potential public exposure near nuclear sites.
Shah’s remarks underscore Pakistan’s commitment to radiation safety and its support for UNSCEAR’s work in assessing and reporting on the effects of atomic radiation. The call for stable funding aims to ensure the committee can continue its critical research and advisory functions effectively.
