Islamabad: Pakistan has announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing breast cancer, a significant health challenge affecting women across the nation. The initiative, outlined by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, emphasizes early detection, timely treatment, and continued care as crucial elements in combating the disease, which remains a priority for the country’s health agenda.
According to Press Information Department, the Federal Government, in collaboration with provincial authorities and local institutions, is working to ensure the availability of essential healthcare services, including specialized cancer treatment facilities nationwide. Acknowledging the challenges faced by women in rural and underprivileged areas, the government has underscored its commitment to providing equitable healthcare access, regardless of geographical or financial barriers.
Key elements of the initiative include the training of Lady Health Workers to educate women on breast self-examination and the importance of seeking timely medical advice. These efforts are supported by specialized training for healthcare personnel at primary centers to enhance their capacity for early detection of the disease. The Federal Breast Cancer Screening Centre at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad plays a pivotal role by offering free screening, diagnostic services, and medicines, along with timely referrals for further evaluation.
Efforts are underway to expand access to breast cancer screening through public health and social protection programs, in collaboration with private organizations. The government also aims to foster coordination among healthcare institutions and stakeholders to strengthen the overall response to breast cancer.
Prime Minister Sharif urged various sectors of society, including families, communities, media, and medical professionals, to help dismantle the stigma associated with breast cancer and encourage women to seek medical examinations and treatment proactively. His message highlighted the government’s commitment to protecting the health of Pakistani women, emphasizing the importance of healthy mothers as the foundation of healthy families and a brighter future for the nation.
