Islamabad: Pakistan has formally requested UNESCO to support the inclusion of Rani Ghat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Port of Banbhore in Sindh on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The proposal was made during a meeting attended by UNESCO Representative in Pakistan, Mr. Fuad Pashayev, and Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Aurangzeb Khan Khichi.

According to Press Information Department, Pakistan’s Tentative List currently comprises 37 properties, including the Archaeological Site of Ranighat and the Port of Banbhore. The request for UNESCO’s assistance was made with the aim of advancing heritage nominations and enhancing conservation efforts for these sites. A visit by the World Heritage Committee to Banbhore is anticipated from September 6 to 11, 2026, with Secretary National Heritage and Culture Asad Rehman Gilani expected to join the delegation.

Mr. Pashayev assured the Minister of UNESCO’s commitment to providing support for heritage preservation in Pakistan. He also emphasized the organization’s dedication to promoting awareness and technical engagement in preserving the country’s cultural assets. During the meeting, discussions extended to the potential inclusion of four Pakistani foods and culinary traditions in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage framework, with a request for the Ministry to submit a list for review.

In addition, Mr. Pashayev suggested further research into an ancient trade route connecting the Indus Valley Civilization with other historic regions. The Federal Minister expressed interest in organizing a conference to explore this route’s significance.

The dialogue also covered plans for technical workshops, cultural festivals, and upcoming cultural activities under Pakistan’s leadership in international organizations. Mr. Pashayev acknowledged Pakistan’s heritage preservation efforts and highlighted the significance of its properties on the Tentative List.
