New York: Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to promote the universal message of peace, harmony, and tranquility as taught by Buddha, in collaboration with the international community. This pledge was underscored by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during his address at the International Day of Vesak 2026 at the United Nations.

According to Radio Pakistan, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized Pakistan’s historical ties to Buddhism, noting that the country hosts significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites such as Taxila, Swat, and Takht-e-Bahi. He highlighted that Vesak embodies Buddha’s lasting message of peace, compassion, and mindfulness, which is particularly pertinent in the context of increasing global conflicts and divisions.

The representative also spoke about Pakistan’s connection to Buddhism, rooted in the ancient Gandhara civilization, and how it continues to influence the nation’s socio-cultural identity and fosters a pluralistic and progressive outlook. Ahmad stated that this heritage strengthens Pakistan’s dedication to interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence, as demonstrated by the UN General Assembly resolution on promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue for peace, co-sponsored by Pakistan and the Philippines.
