Karachi: Port Qasim Authority (PQA) has set a new national record by safely managing the largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cargo ever discharged in Pakistan. The historic achievement was accomplished with the Q-Flex LNG carrier MV Al Kharaitiyat, marking a significant step in reinforcing the country’s maritime trade capabilities.

According to Port Qasim Authority, the vessel entered the Port Qasim channel early in the morning and was secured by 1000 hours at the Engro Elengy Terminal (EETL). This operation was notable for being the deepest and fullest Q-Flex operation conducted at PQA, with a draft of 12.10 meters and a cargo volume of 210,250 cubic meters or 92,510 metric tons of LNG. The efficient discharge of two LNG parcels sequentially optimized throughput efficiency while maintaining safety margins.

Port Qasim’s navigation channel, which extends approximately 49 kilometers from the Arabian Sea to the berths, ranks among the longest LNG channels globally. The intricate dynamics of the channel require precise tidal windows and draft management. The successful berthing is particularly noteworthy as it coincides with the onset of the monsoon season, a period marked by stricter operational limitations.

Beyond LNG handling, PQA serves as the gateway for various cargo types and trade terminals, including containerized cargo, dry bulk, liquid bulk, coal, rice, cement, steel, and petroleum products. The authority’s commitment to modernized systems, digitalization, and continuous operations ensures seamless throughput for vessels across its specialized terminals, thereby bolstering Pakistan’s trade resilience and competitiveness.

The milestone was achieved through the collaborative efforts of stakeholders including Qatar Energy as the loading operator, Nakilat as the vessel owner, EETL as the receiving terminal, and Pakistan State Oil (PSO) in ensuring supply chain integration. PQA’s Marine Operations team played a crucial role in tide and draft planning, working in close collaboration with Qatar Energy and Nakilat, to ensure flawless execution.
