Islamabad: Pakistan has expressed its solidarity with Nepal as the Himalayan nation faces severe floods and other climate-related disasters. Dr. Musadik Malik, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, conveyed his condolences and support during a meeting with Nepal’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Ms. Rita Dhital. Dr. Malik assured that Pakistan is prepared to extend technical and other forms of assistance to aid Nepal’s ongoing recovery efforts.

According to Press Information Department, Dr. Malik emphasized the necessity for regional cooperation in addressing climate-related risks, particularly those associated with glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). He highlighted the importance of developing early-warning systems and risk profiles to protect vulnerable communities, and offered Pakistan’s experience and data on GLOF risks to Nepal. The minister also addressed the economic impact of the disaster, noting the significant damage to infrastructure and its burden on Nepal’s economy.

Dr. Malik called for a reevaluation of international financing mechanisms to support developing economies facing climate-induced disasters. He stressed the urgency of addressing climate-induced loss and damage at the upcoming UN climate conference (COP) and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to supporting Nepal during this challenging time.

The meeting concluded with discussions on enhancing cooperation in climate science, disaster preparedness, and the use of technology in rescue operations. Ms. Dhital expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s solidarity, while Dr. Malik reaffirmed the shared responsibility of both countries in confronting climate change challenges.
