Pakistan Highlights Labor Challenges and Calls for Action at 112th International Labour Conference

Islamabad, At the 112th International Labour Conference held from June 3 to June 14, 2024, Pakistan played a prominent role through the participation of Chaudhry Salik Hussain, Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, and other key delegates. The conference, a significant event for global labor discussions, addressed crucial topics such as labor standards and strategies for promoting decent work and inclusive growth. Pakistan’s engagement underscored its commitment to improving labor conditions and adhering to international labor standards.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Minister Hussain, during his speech on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), discussed the pressing labor issues in the occupied Arab territories, particularly Palestine. He highlighted the severe challenges faced by Palestinian workers and stressed the dire humanitarian situation exacerbated by recent conflicts. The minister cited a significant unemployment rate and a sharp decline in GDP as major concerns that require urgent international attention.

Minister Hussain also called for an immediate ceasefire and the facilitation of humanitarian aid to Gaza, aligning with the OIC’s stance on protecting lives and improving working conditions in conflict zones. He commended the International Labour Organization (ILO) for its efforts to support workers and address the adverse impacts of crises in Gaza and the West Bank, reflecting a comprehensive approach to global labor issues.
