Islamabad: Pakistan is actively implementing international maritime regulations across its maritime sector, as stated by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Thursday. Emphasizing the importance of enforcement, training, and institutional coordination, the announcement aligns with the 2026 World Maritime Day theme, which highlights the translation of maritime policies into practical measures.

According to Press Information Department, Minister Chaudhry underscored the necessity for coordination among government institutions, regulators, port authorities, and shipping companies to implement maritime standards effectively. He announced the establishment of a Maritime Education Endowment Fund with Rs1.2 billion in seed funding to enhance education and skill development in maritime communities. Further, the Pakistan Marine Academy is being upgraded to a degree-awarding institution to bolster training and professional competence.

In terms of infrastructure, a Rs12 billion project is underway to modernize the Gadani shipbreaking yard, aiming to meet international safety and environmental standards. Environmental considerations are a priority, with initiatives such as mangrove restoration and regular marine pollution removal campaigns by the Karachi Port Trust.

The minister linked these efforts to the Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting contributions to infrastructure, climate action, ocean protection, and international partnerships. Looking forward, Chaudhry outlined Pakistan’s vision for a “Maritime Century (2047-2147),” focusing on expanding deep-sea port capacities, developing AI-enabled industrial complexes, and promoting regional maritime cooperation.
