Islamabad, Pakistan has called for a unified approach to interagency data-sharing to enhance its early warning systems against seasonal floods, a need highlighted by Pakistani experts at the 28th Conference of Parties (Cop28) in Dubai.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the panel discussion titled ‘Using Data to Build Climate Resilient Cities in Pakistan’ featured prominent figures such as Secretary Planning Awais Manzur Sumra and Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik. The discussion focused on the critical role of data in combating climate challenges.
Awais Sumra emphasized the importance of robust data governance in the wake of last year’s severe floods in Pakistan. He advocated for improved weather forecasting based on the National Disaster Management Plan, developed in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik outlined the evolving role of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and its recent progress. He mentioned the establishment of the National Emergencies Operation Centre, which utilizes satellite data to enhance disaster response capabilities.
The emphasis on data-sharing and technology utilization at Cop28 reflects Pakistan’s commitment to developing more resilient urban environments in the face of growing climate challenges.
