Geneva: Pakistan has taken on the Presidency of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, marking a significant role for the country in global arms control and disarmament dialogues. Additional Secretary for Arms Control and Disarmament and Foreign Office Spokesman Tahir Hussain Andrabi will lead the conference meetings on behalf of Pakistan.
According to Radio Pakistan, during its presidency, Pakistan will guide discussions and negotiations on the Annual Report of the Conference and the related resolution in the First Committee of the UN General Assembly. The UN Conference on Disarmament is recognized as the only multilateral forum for negotiating disarmament and arms control treaties, involving 65 member states, including nuclear-armed nations.
The conference agenda includes addressing critical issues such as halting the nuclear arms race, preventing nuclear war, and stopping the weaponization of outer space. Pakistan’s leadership at this time underscores the international community’s confidence in its diplomatic capabilities and its significant role in multilateral arms control and disarmament efforts. This position places Pakistan at the forefront of global discussions on arms control, disarmament, and international peace and security.
