Islamabad: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani reaffirmed Pakistan’s enduring relationship with Yemen, underscoring cultural and historical ties during a meeting with Yemeni Ambassador, Mohammed Motahar Alashabi, on Wednesday. The dialogue focused on enhancing bilateral ties, regional stability, and economic collaboration.
According to a statement by Senate of Pakistan, Chairman Gilani assured the Ambassador of Pakistan’s continued support for Yemen, particularly in achieving peace and stability. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to providing scholarships and professional training for Yemeni students and officials, and offered expertise in key sectors such as climate change, information technology, agriculture, and defense.
The discussion also touched on regional issues, with Chairman Gilani highlighting Pakistan’s strategic role as a nuclear power and its alliances with China and Turkiye. Addressing the Afghan refugee situation, he urged international intervention to support Pakistan’s efforts.
The Yemeni Ambassador expressed appreciation for the longstanding relationship and called for increased cooperation in education and international collaboration. The meeting reviewed Pakistan’s support for peaceful resolutions in Yemen, in line with United Nations and OIC resolutions, including the Riyadh Agreement.
Chairman Gilani emphasized the potential for expanding trade and investment between Pakistan and Yemen. He noted the role of Pakistan’s institutions and private sector in Yemen’s reconstruction and the establishment of the Special Investment Facilitation Council to streamline investment processes.
To further strengthen ties, Chairman Gilani announced the creation of a Parliamentary Friendship Group and extended invitations to Yemen’s leadership for official visits. He also invited the Ambassador to Multan for discussions with the business community to explore economic opportunities.
