Pakistan and Netherlands Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Economic Relations

Islamabad, Netherlands Ambassador Mrs. Henny De Vries met with Pakistan’s Caretaker Finance Minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar to discuss various aspects of the two countries’ bilateral economic relations.

According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the meeting in Islamabad focused on multiple topics, including the upcoming elections in the Netherlands and the importance of democratic processes. Ambassador De Vries congratulated Dr. Akhtar on Pakistan’s recent Staff Level Agreement for the first review of the IMF Pakistan Standby Arrangement and the overall improvement in the country’s economic situation.

Dr. Akhtar highlighted the government’s reforms in various sectors, notably the “Broadening of the Tax Base” initiative led by the Federal Board of Revenue. These efforts are part of Pakistan’s commitment to improving its tax-to-GDP ratio and reducing the current account deficit. Additionally, Dr. Akhtar requested the Ambassador to increase focus on the Dutch Fellowship Program, a prominent foreign-funded scholarship program for Pakistani students.

Ambassador De Vries recognized the positive trajectory in Pakistan’s economic recovery, acknowledging the resurgence in sectors such as agriculture, services, and industry. She particularly commended Pakistan’s initiatives for financial inclusion, especially those targeting women, and praised measures to enhance women’s labor participation across different economic sectors.

The Ambassador also reaffirmed the Netherlands’ commitment to increasing investment in Pakistan. The meeting also addressed critical issues like post-flood rehabilitation and the impact of climate change on Pakistan.

In conclusion, Dr. Akhtar expressed Pakistan’s strong dedication to reinforcing diplomatic ties with the Netherlands and the desire for collaborative efforts to benefit both nations.
