Islamabad: Pakistan and Maldives have reiterated their commitment to expanding cooperation in areas such as parliamentary diplomacy, trade, education, and climate change during a meeting between Acting Chairman Senate Syedaal Khan Nasar and Speaker of the People’s Majlis of the Republic of Maldives Abdul Raheem Abdullah. The officials, accompanied by a Maldivian parliamentary delegation, discussed the potential for strengthening bilateral relations rooted in mutual respect, trust, and shared interests.
According to Senate of Pakistan, the meeting highlighted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding and enhancing institutional cooperation between the two nations. Both parties emphasized the need for increased parliamentary exchanges and collaboration to further deepen ties. Syedaal Khan Nasar noted the potential for trade and economic growth, advocating for improved air and maritime connectivity, market access, and private sector involvement to bolster bilateral trade.
The discussion also underscored the significance of educational opportunities, particularly for Maldivian students in Pakistani universities, and the shared challenges posed by climate change. Both countries agreed on the necessity of cooperation in climate-related research and capacity building. Additionally, the meeting addressed the importance of defense training and maritime security as key areas for institutional cooperation.
The Maldivian Speaker acknowledged the longstanding friendship between the two countries and expressed a desire to enhance relations further. He praised Pakistan’s constructive role internationally and its consistent support for Maldives in various fields, including the construction of the Parliament building in Malé. Both nations expressed satisfaction with current bilateral cooperation and agreed to explore new avenues for strengthening their relationship.
The meeting was attended by members of the National Assembly, Senators, the Maldivian parliamentary delegation, and senior officials of the Senate Secretariat.
