Islamabad: Acting Chairman Senate Syedaal Khan Nasar recently met with the Speaker of the People’s Majlis of the Republic of Maldives, Abdul Raheem Abdullah, in Islamabad to discuss the strengthening of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Maldives. The meeting, which took place at a local hotel, focused on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, education, defense, tourism, and climate change.

According to the Senate of Pakistan, Nasar emphasized the deep-rooted ties between the two nations, highlighting the importance of mutual respect, trust, and shared interests. He underscored the role of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering better understanding and cooperation, advocating for expanded exchanges and institutional linkages between the Pakistani and Maldivian legislatures.

The discussions also covered the potential to boost trade and economic cooperation, with Nasar stressing the importance of improving connectivity and market access to promote bilateral trade. He pointed to Pakistan’s export potential in various sectors, including textiles, rice, and pharmaceuticals, and called for greater educational opportunities for Maldivian students in Pakistan.

On the issue of climate change, Nasar noted that both countries are significantly affected and called for joint initiatives and capacity-building efforts. He also emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation in defense training and maritime security.

Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah agreed with Nasar’s views and expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s support and contributions, particularly highlighting the construction of the Maldivian Parliament building by Pakistan. He affirmed Maldives’ desire to expand cooperation in multiple areas and acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive international role.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing satisfaction with the current state of bilateral cooperation and a mutual commitment to exploring new avenues for strengthening relations. The session was attended by members of the National Assembly, Senators, and senior officials from both countries.
