Islamabad: Pakistan and Japan have formalized a $16.4 million grant agreement aimed at bolstering flood protection efforts in the Sindh Province. The agreement focuses on enhancing the infrastructure of the Old Abad Bund along the Indus River, which is intended to fortify vulnerable communities against future flooding.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Exchange of Notes and Record of Discussion were executed by Secretary Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim Kidwai and Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Akamatsu Shuichi in Islamabad. The Grant Agreement was further solidified by Additional Secretary Ms. Sabina Qureshi and Senior Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Pakistan Sugawara Takayuki. The project’s primary goal is to improve and strengthen flood defenses in the Larkana area of Sindh Province, specifically targeting the right bank of the Indus River.
