Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, convened a meeting with Mr. Robert Simpson, Deputy Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), to evaluate ongoing collaborations and explore new initiatives in sustainable agriculture and rural development.

According to Press Information Department, the meeting focused on addressing climate resilience, food security, and sustainable agricultural development in Pakistan. The minister expressed appreciation for FAO’s support in fortifying Pakistan’s agriculture and food systems, acknowledging the country’s vulnerability to climate change despite its minimal carbon emissions. Emphasis was placed on enhanced technical support and the timely execution of current projects.

Key collaborative areas discussed included the One Health Programme, food safety and phytosanitary systems, antimicrobial resistance, sustainable agricultural mechanization, and the use of advanced technologies such as GIS and remote sensing for climate-smart agriculture. Mr. Simpson proposed a National Climate Forum in collaboration with the Ministry, a suggestion welcomed by the minister.

The government’s priorities were outlined by Rana Tanveer Hussain, focusing on food safety systems, climate-resilient seeds, agricultural mechanization, and reducing reliance on imported commodities. The FAO delegation assured continued support in mobilizing funds from international entities and discussed upcoming policy reports and initiatives like the One Country One Priority Product.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation in climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and food security to benefit Pakistan’s farming community.
