ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have renewed their commitment to enhancing collaboration in areas crucial to food security and climate resilience. The pledge was made during a meeting between Rana Tanveer Hussain, Pakistan’s Minister for National Food Security and Research, and an FAO delegation led by Robert Simpson, the organization’s Deputy Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific.

According to Radio Pakistan, the discussions in Islamabad focused on sustainable agriculture, livestock development, and the pressing need for climate adaptation strategies. Minister Hussain highlighted Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change impacts, despite the country’s minimal contribution to global carbon emissions. He emphasized the necessity for increased technical assistance and the prompt execution of ongoing projects to bolster the nation’s food security infrastructure.

The minister outlined key government priorities, which include reinforcing food safety and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) systems, boosting livestock exports, and reducing reliance on imported wheat and edible oil. The FAO delegation assured continued support in mobilizing funding from international financial institutions and development partners to aid Pakistan in achieving these objectives.
