Pakistan and China Strengthen Ties, Pledge Enhanced Strategic Cooperation

Islamabad: Pakistan and China have pledged to deepen their strategic cooperation, focusing on expanding economic ties, investment opportunities, and regional connectivity. This commitment was reinforced during a high-level meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Islamabad today, emphasizing the ongoing development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and other bilateral initiatives.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, both leaders underscored the urgency of accelerating the implementation of CPEC projects, a major multi-phase initiative involving infrastructure and economic development projects throughout Pakistan. President Zardari expressed that the friendship with China remains a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy and highlighted the potential for further expansion in their bilateral relations.

The discussions also touched on increasing connectivity through the construction of all-weather roads to enhance commercial and public transport links. President Zardari urged Chinese companies to consider investments in the Pakistan Stock Exchange and emphasized leveraging China’s economic growth through projects like CPEC and the strategic use of Gwadar Port.

The meeting also served as a platform for President Zardari to announce his upcoming visit to China in November, aiming to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties further. He also addressed the security of Chinese nationals in Pakistan, particularly in light of a recent terror attack, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding Chinese citizens and interests within its borders.

Premier Li expressed China’s ongoing support for Pakistan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and reaffirmed the deep-rooted friendship and cooperation between the two nations, which he expects to continue under President Xi Jinping’s leadership. He also praised Pakistan’s consistent support for China on critical issues like Taiwan, Tibet, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and the South China Sea.

The meeting marks another significant step in reinforcing the strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, as both nations look to navigate the challenges of regional security and development together.
