Islamabad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Munir Akram, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to eradicating the Polio virus by 2026. Speaking to the Executive Board of UNICEF, Akram outlined the significant strides Pakistan has made towards this goal, despite facing numerous challenges along the way.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Akram highlighted the reduction in polio cases within Pakistan, noting that only six cases were detected last year, thanks to the concerted efforts of the government and its global partners. He also shared the ambitious target set by the government to immunize 45 million children in the current year, emphasizing the dedication to meet this goal through continued efforts.
Akram called upon donors and partners to support Pakistan’s polio eradication initiatives generously, stressing the importance of vaccination to protect children against the disease. UNICEF’s Executive Director, Catherine Russel, echoed this sentiment in her opening remarks, stating that the eradication of Polio worldwide is now within reach.
