New Delhi: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi strongly protested against the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament, denouncing it as unconstitutional and dramaticall tearing up the document in the assembly.
Owaisi’s protest was directed at the bill introduced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He asserted that the legislation seeks to create division within the country, highlighting religious sites such as temples and mosques.
“I condemn it and request you to accept the 10 amendments that I have proposed in this bill,” Owaisi stated in the parliament. He invoked historical resistance by referring to Mahatma Gandhi’s rejection of discriminatory laws in South Africa, using Gandhi’s act of tearing such laws as a symbolic gesture in his protest against the current bill.
He argued that the bill violates Articles 25 and 26 of the Indian Constitution, which protect religious freedom, describing it as an injustice to Muslims. Owaisi accused the bill of aiming to humiliate the Muslim community and inciting controversy over religious sites.
The source of Owaisi’s statements is attributed to Kashmir Media Service. The protest marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over religious and constitutional rights in India.
