Srinagar, Omar Abdullah, the vice-president of the National Conference, has accused the Indian government and the Election Commission of India (ECI) of forming a dubious alliance, resulting in the continuous delay of Assembly elections in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, during a media interaction in Pulwama, Abdullah expressed his concerns, stating that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been deprived of their voting rights since 2014, which he believes is leading the region towards a path of destruction. He described the situation as a “fixed match” between the ECI and the Indian government, where each entity deflects responsibility onto the other when questioned about the delay in conducting elections.
Abdullah emphasized the negative implications of withholding polls, warning that it would drive Jammu and Kashmir towards further instability. He also referenced the public’s dissatisfaction with the decisions made on August 5, 2019, as reflected in the results of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil elections, and District Development Council (DDC) polls. He suggested that a similar sentiment of discontent would be evident if Assembly elections were held.
