Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, announced that the country is not facing a wheat shortage and has sufficient reserves to meet national demands. This statement was made during the 12th high-level meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee, which reviewed the current wheat procurement status and food security outlook.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting gathered senior officials from the Ministry, provincial agriculture secretaries, and representatives from PASSCO, among other stakeholders. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted on the wheat stocks held by public sector agencies and ongoing procurement efforts across provinces to ensure a steady supply nationwide. The committee also analyzed domestic consumption needs, strategic reserves, and market trends.
Officials briefed the Minister that national reserves currently hold adequate wheat stocks, and ongoing procurement activities are expected to further bolster the buffer stock in the coming weeks. The coordinated efforts between federal and provincial authorities have been credited with maintaining stability in wheat availability and price management.
Minister Hussain dismissed reports of a shortfall as unfounded and assured that the government is dedicated to maintaining food security, price stability, and a consistent wheat supply across all provinces. He instructed relevant departments to closely monitor procurement activities, enhance transparency in stock reporting, and ensure timely decision-making to prevent artificial price fluctuations.
The Committee emphasized the government’s continued commitment to safeguarding both farmers’ interests and consumer needs through a balanced procurement and distribution strategy.
