Lucknow: A Muslim youth has died in police custody in Uttar Pradesh, a state governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leading to public outcry and protests.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the deceased, identified as Irfan, was found dead at the Rai Satti police post in Sambhal district. He had been detained on Sunday night on charges that remain unspecified by the authorities.
The victim’s family alleges that Irfan was subjected to torture while in custody, which they claim led to his deteriorating health and subsequent death. The news of his passing sparked widespread protests by locals demanding accountability from the authorities.
Reports from Indian media suggest that police officials vacated the area, leaving Irfan’s body unattended inside the police post. This action has further fueled the ire of the local community.
The deceased’s wife has stated that the police did not disclose any reason for Irfan’s detention. She alleges that officers forcibly took him from their home, issuing threats during the process.
The incident has raised questions about the conduct of law enforcement in the region, with calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Irfan’s death.
