BEIJING: Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik emphasized the critical need for enhanced cooperation between Pakistan and China on climate research, glacier protection, and sustainable development during the 5th China Xizang Trans-Himalaya Forum held in China.

According to Radio Pakistan, Dr. Malik highlighted the existential threat posed by climate change to the region’s natural resources and communities. He underscored that Pakistan, which hosts approximately 13,500 glaciers essential to its civilization, water security, and ecological balance, faces increasing threats from rising greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions contribute to global warming and the accelerated melting of glaciers, leading to severe floods and droughts. Dr. Malik noted that recent flood disasters in Pakistan have resulted in the loss of about 6,000 lives.

Dr. Malik stressed the importance of expanding scientific collaboration on glacier conservation and climate change. He proposed the establishment of a virtual green university aimed at bringing together researchers and institutions across the region for joint climate research efforts. The Minister also emphasized the significance of the Trans-Himalaya Forum as a platform for expanding bilateral cooperation and exploring new opportunities for sustainable regional development.
