Karachi: Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has emphasized the need for immediate collective action to safeguard marine resources amid increasing environmental challenges. Speaking on World Oceans Day, he outlined key initiatives aimed at expanding coastal conservation efforts across the region.

According to Radio Pakistan, Chaudhry highlighted ongoing activities, including a weekly cleanup campaign by the Karachi Port Trust focused on removing marine waste and enhancing harbour sustainability. He also mentioned efforts underway to restore degraded coastal zones and improve marine biodiversity.

Chaudhry stressed the importance of mangrove restoration as a core component of the country’s strategy for coastal resilience. Mangroves serve as natural carbon sinks, storm buffers, and nurseries for fish, making them critical for ecological balance. Additionally, he noted that Pakistan stands to benefit significantly from improved data sharing and marine innovation partnerships.

The Minister concluded by underscoring that the future of coastal economies hinges on the protection and restoration of ocean ecosystems.
