Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti has expressed gratitude to the chief ministers of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka for their opposition to the Waqf Amendment Act. In a series of identical letters, she praised the leaders for taking a stand she described as “courageous and principled.”

According to reports from Kashmir Media Service, Mufti addressed letters to West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee, Tamil Nadu’s M K Stalin, and Karnataka’s Siddaramaiah. The letters were also shared by her on the microblogging platform X.

In her messages, Mufti appreciated the chief ministers for their dissent against the Waqf Amendment Act, highlighting the increasing criminalization of dissent in current times. She referred to their opposition as a “breath of fresh air” and a source of inspiration for the residents of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mufti emphasized the challenges faced by minorities in India, particularly Muslims, in light of recent legislative changes. She criticized the enforcement of new Waqf laws, which she claims undermine religious freedoms. These actions, she noted, are reminiscent of past injustices, such as the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

The PDP leader voiced concerns over what she sees as a broader pattern of rights erosion in India, fueled by a growing majoritarian agenda. She underscored the importance of standing up for the country’s core values of plurality and diversity.
