Geneva: Lebanon is grappling with a deepening humanitarian crisis as Israeli airstrikes and Hezbollah rocket attacks continue to inflict severe consequences on civilians. At least 886 people, including 111 children, have died since the beginning of March, according to Lebanese authorities. The conflict has led to the destruction of homes, healthcare facilities, and essential infrastructure, while also displacing thousands of people.

According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Israeli airstrikes have demolished entire residential buildings in densely populated areas, raising concerns under international humanitarian law. The strikes have not spared makeshift tents along Beirut’s seafront, where displaced families, including medical staff, have been killed. The escalating conflict has resulted in significant displacement, with many families forced to live in overcrowded shelters or makeshift tents exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Israel has issued extensive warnings and displacement orders in southern Lebanon, affecting regions between the Litani and Zahrani rivers. These orders may constitute forced displacement, a practice prohibited under international law. The displaced population faces numerous challenges, including inadequate healthcare, food, and water supplies, along with disrupted education and livelihoods.

The situation is further exacerbated by reports of discrimination in the Lebanese rental market and rising hateful rhetoric against certain communities. The destruction of bridges has isolated southern Lebanon, complicating access to humanitarian aid. Israeli officials’ statements threatening severe destruction add to the anxiety and fear among the Lebanese population.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and accountability for violations. He urges the international community to support humanitarian efforts in Lebanon to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict.
