Lahore, Pakistan’s esteemed Deaf cricket team, known for their 19-year undefeated streak, was recently honored with a warm reception at the Chief Minister’s Office. The event, hosted by Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, celebrated the team’s unparalleled achievements and contributions to the sport. During the reception, the Chief Minister notably left her official seat to sit among the players, engaging with them through sign language and expressing her admiration for their skills.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the visit included several noteworthy moments that underscored the government’s support for the Deaf cricket team. Prime Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif personally handed over a check of 38 lakh rupees to the team, a significant increase from the initial 2 lakh rupees, in recognition of their accomplishments. In response to a request from the team, she immediately ordered the allocation of a cricket ground for their exclusive use. The players, in a gesture of appreciation, presented a golden model of a lion statue to the Chief Minister, symbolizing strength and courage.
The event was further highlighted by the team presenting the Dubai World Cup trophy to Prime Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, celebrating their recent victory and shared success. The Prime Minister, speaking through a sign language interpreter, expressed her long-standing desire to meet with the team, commending their exceptional work and dedication to the sport despite their hearing impairments. She also reassured them of her commitment to meeting their needs and supporting their continued success.
In a display of mutual respect and admiration, the Deaf cricketers, through sign language, expressed their heartfelt appreciation for Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, promising their prayers and support for her leadership. The event was attended by senior officials, including Sr. Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Information Minister Azmi Zahid Bukhari, and other dignitaries, all of whom joined in celebrating the team’s achievements and the government’s commitment to sports and welfare.
