Trivandrum: In a significant move, the Kerala Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution against the Indian government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative. The resolution, presented in the absence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan due to health reasons, marks a clear stance of opposition from the state’s legislative body.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Parliamentary Affairs Minister MB Rajesh introduced the resolution, calling the proposal “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional.” The resolution urges the Modi government to immediately retract the plan, which is seen as a threat to the nation’s federal structure. Minister Rajesh highlighted the risk of weakening India’s federal framework and undermining the parliamentary democracy, attributing the move to an agenda of centralizing power by the RSS and BJP.

The opposition also expressed their skepticism, agreeing on the impracticality of the proposal for Indian democracy. The CPI, a key player in the ruling CPI-M government, strongly criticized the idea, linking it to a broader agenda by Sangh Parivar to enforce uniformity across various aspects of life, suggesting a slippery slope toward a singular election, party, and leader model.

The stance against the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal extends beyond Kerala, with West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee and Tamil Nadu’s MK Stalin also voicing objections. Together with approximately 15 other parties, including significant members of the INDIA bloc like Congress and the Trinamool Congress, a formidable opposition has formed against this controversial policy idea.
