Lahore: A ceremony organized by the Kashmir Center Lahore on the Right to Self-Determination Day highlighted the ongoing struggle of Kashmiris for their right to self-determination amidst Indian control. Speakers at the event underscored the unfulfilled promises made to the Kashmiri people despite international commitments.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the speakers noted that the United Nations Commission for Pakistan and India passed a resolution on January 5, 1949, granting Kashmiris the right to self-determination, which was acknowledged by both Pakistan and India. However, the speakers claimed that India’s reluctance has led to a failure in fulfilling these promises. They further mentioned that the United Nations Security Council has reaffirmed its commitment to this right through various resolutions.
The speakers advocated for a plebiscite as the only viable solution to the Kashmir issue, in line with United Nations resolutions. They accused India of ignoring these resolutions and creating obstacles in resolving the dispute, while also intensifying state repression in the region.
The event featured remarks from Syed Naseeb Ullah Gardezi, Vice President of the PMLN AJK chapter; Hurriyat leader Engineer Mushtaq Mehmood; PPP leader Ghulam Abbas Mir; Inam-ul-Hassan; PTI leader Mirza Sadiq Jarral; Farooq Azad; President of Jamiat Ittehad-ul-Ulama Lahore Ihsan Ullah Tabassum; Shehzad Nazki; Allama Fida-ur-Rehman; Abdul Majeed Butt; Qazi Anwar; Naveed Malik; Maqbool Awan; among others.
