Kashmiri Leaders Mufti and Abdullah Placed Under House Arrest Ahead of Article 370 Verdict

Srinagar, In a preemptive move by the Narendra Modi-led Indian government, prominent Kashmiri political leaders Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah have been placed under house arrest in Srinagar. This development comes just hours before the Indian Supreme Court is expected to deliver its verdict on the abrogation of Article 370.

According to Kashmir Media Service , that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) released a statement in Srinagar confirming the detention of its President, Mehbooba Mufti, at her residence. The police deployment outside her house is a measure to prevent her from leading potential anti-India protest rallies following the verdict. The PDP took to Twitter to announce, “Even before Supreme Court judgement is pronounced, Police have sealed the doors of the residence of PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and put her under illegal house arrest.”

Similarly, the National Conference reported that their senior leader, Omar Abdullah, has been confined within his home. Abdullah addressed the issue publicly, questioning the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir about the police action and whether it was taken independently of his knowledge.

In addition to these high-profile detentions, police raids have been conducted at the homes of several Hurriyat leaders and activists, including APHC leader from Jammu, Davinder Singh Behal. Behal was not present during the raid at his residence, which came in the wake of his statement opposing the Modi government’s revocation of Article 370.

These measures indicate the government’s efforts to maintain control and prevent unrest in anticipation of the Supreme Court’s critical ruling on a matter that has significantly impacted the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
