Kashmir Seminar Criticizes UN’s Inaction on Self-Determination Resolution

Islamabad, A seminar/webinar organized by the Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR) and the United Kashmir Journalists Association in Islamabad has brought to light the failure of the United Nations to implement its resolutions regarding the Kashmir dispute.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the event titled “Kashmiris’ Right to self-determination and responsibility of United Nations” featured speakers who examined the UN Commission for India and Pakistan’s resolution passed on January 5, 1949. This resolution granted the Kashmiri people the right to decide their political future through a free and impartial referendum, a promise that remains unfulfilled over seven decades later.

The speakers expressed deep disappointment over the UN’s inability to implement this and other resolutions related to Kashmir, or to compel India to honor its commitments to the Kashmiri people. They highlighted the events of August 5, 2019, when India’s government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, abrogated the special status of occupied Jammu and Kashmir and initiated moves to alter the demographic makeup of the region by resettling Indian Hindus.

The unresolved status of the Kashmir dispute, despite being on the UN agenda for several decades, was a focal point of the discussion. The participants urged the UN to actively engage in resolving the long-standing issue by facilitating the Kashmiris’ exercise of their right to self-determination, a step seen as crucial for establishing lasting peace in South Asia.

The seminar featured notable speakers including PML-N Azad Kashmir President Shah Ghulam Qadir, leaders from the All Parties Hurriyat Conference AJK like Ghulam Muhammad Safi and Advocate Parvez Shah, foreign journalist Robert Fitina, and scholars Dr. Farah Naz, Nazish Altaf, Dr. Ashraf Wani, and President of UKJA Abdul Latif Dar. The event, moderated by Altaf Hussain Wani of KIIR, saw active participation from young scholars from various Islamabad universities and concluded with an interactive Q and A session.
