Kashmir Conflict Central to South Asia’s Peace, Says Former Ambassador

MUZAFFARABAD: Kashmir is crucial to ensuring peace and stability in South Asia, with the region’s future hinging on justice and self-determination for the Kashmiri people, asserted Sardar Masood Khan, a former ambassador and ex-president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

According to President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khan made these remarks during a seminar titled “The Kashmir Conflict: A Historical Perspective and the Way Forward,” held at Cadet College Muzaffarabad in observance of Kashmir Black Day. He addressed cadets, faculty, researchers, and panellists, emphasizing the significance of understanding the historical roots of the Kashmir dispute, particularly the events following October 27, 1947, which marked the arrival of Indian forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

Khan spoke on the accession controversy and the internationalisation of the dispute at the United Nations, stressing the centrality of the Kashmiri people in any resolution. He highlighted the historical struggle for political rights and the impact of displacement and violence experienced by Kashmiri communities.

He voiced concerns over ongoing humanitarian and political issues in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir post-August 5, 2019, actions affecting the region’s constitutional status. Khan urged the academic community to delve into historical records, international law, and UN documents for a comprehensive understanding of the dispute.

Addressing the strategic importance of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, Khan acknowledged Kashmiri sacrifices and asserted that resolving the Kashmir dispute is essential for peace in South Asia. He encouraged cadets to consider global dynamics and the role of international cooperation in conflict resolution.

In closing, Khan motivated the cadets to contribute to Pakistan’s progress through education and leadership, emphasizing that national strength should encompass economic, technological, and institutional development alongside defence capabilities.
