Bengaluru, July 11, 2022 (PPI-OT):Amid rising Hindutva tide in India, the Karnataka government has ordered district authorities to keep a careful check on cow slaughter throughout the state on Eid-ul-Azha. The government, in this regard, mentioned the so-called Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cow Bill 2020 that makes slaughtering any cattle a serious offense punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Congress and CPI-M have criticized the notification, saying it is “clear motive” to hurt the sentiments of a community or to appease another community. According to the reports, Minister of Animal Husbandry, Prabhu Chauhan has advised the Muslim community to refrain from offering animals as a sacrifice. The ministry has issued a warning that anyone found sacrificing livestock during Eid-ul- Azha will face the full force of the law.

“Police and animal husbandry officials have been instructed to maintain strict vigil across the state to make sure the new law is strictly followed. A close watch will be maintained at borders (with neighbouring states) to ensure cattle are not transported.”
