KARACHI: In an ongoing initiative to address civic issues and enhance municipal services, Karachi’s administration is implementing a series of practical measures to improve basic facilities, restore roads, and address longstanding water and sewerage problems. Citizens are also being offered opportunities to directly submit complaints, according to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Karmullah Waqasi, spokesperson and parliamentary leader in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, stated that Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced the continuation of e-Kachehri sessions, where citizens can directly communicate their concerns. The next session is scheduled for October 8 from 3pm to 4pm. This initiative aims to foster accountability and ensure the timely resolution of public grievances.
Efforts to rehabilitate major roads, including II Chundrigar Road and Shahrah-e-Quaidin, are underway with a focus on lane marking to improve traffic management, Waqasi noted. Additionally, operations to remove unauthorized cables are being conducted by City Wardens, addressing urban infrastructure issues through a phased approach.
Furthermore, the introduction of a new water treatment plant under the Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan marks a significant step toward addressing water and sewerage challenges. The plant, inaugurated by Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, aims to treat 35 million gallons of water daily initially, with plans to expand capacity to 100 million gallons per day.
The initiative is expected to alleviate pressure on freshwater resources and support industrial activities by supplying treated water to the SITE industrial area. These efforts are part of a broader urban development agenda that includes improvements in traffic management, street lighting, and cleanliness, guided by Mayor Wahab’s directives.
Waqasi emphasized the importance of practical solutions to the core issues faced by Karachi’s residents, highlighting the potential of ongoing projects in water conservation and environmental enhancement.
