KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has extended an invitation to the MQM and Jamaat-e-Islami to join forces in addressing Karachi’s pressing issues through a collaborative strategy. He emphasized the need for a united front in lobbying the federal government for budget allocations for critical projects, such as the K-IV water initiative.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Madani Football and Cricket Stadium in Mauripur, a project valued at Rs. 164 million, Mayor Wahab highlighted that KMC has designated Rs. 20 million for each union council, including Rs. 220 million for Mauripur’s 11 union councils. He also announced plans to repair the RO plant to alleviate water shortages, assuring that funds will be used for public benefit.

Mayor Wahab proposed that if the federal government is unable to operate the 200-bed Steel Mill Hospital, it should be transferred to KMC. He fulfilled a pledge to Mauripur residents by initiating the stadium project, which will feature amenities such as a walking track and public facilities, and is expected to be completed in six months.

He noted that the PPP has made infrastructural improvements on Mauripur Road and Sands Pit Road and vowed to continue public welfare projects. The mayor voiced concerns over thefts of poles and lights, blaming a mafia that exploits drug addicts. He urged law enforcement to take action and warned officials of accountability for future thefts.

In discussions on revenue generation, Mayor Wahab mentioned KMC’s Rs. 55 million earnings from charged parking, with plans to make parking free pending council approval. He also addressed the issue of beggary, noting efforts to clear major roads.

Mayor Wahab called on the Prime Minister to ensure a consistent gas supply during Suhoor and Iftar and suggested including key city officials in the decision-making boards of utility companies.

Reflecting on KMC Council meetings, he expressed satisfaction with the recent peaceful session and anticipated continued constructive discussions. The mayor reiterated the ongoing commitment to development across Karachi’s districts.
