New Delhi: An Israeli tourist and an Indian woman were gang-raped near a UNESCO World Heritage site in southern India, while one man was killed, marking a tragic event on International Women’s Day.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred as the victims were stargazing with two other male tourists by the Tungabhadra canal in Hampi. An altercation over money with three men led to the attack.

The assailants pushed the men into the canal and raped the women. Two men, including an American tourist, survived. However, a third man’s body was later recovered.

The assault took place in Anegundi, a popular backpacker area. The group had traveled to the canal’s left bank near Sanapur Lake for a night of stargazing.

While at the canal, three men on a motorcycle approached the tourists, initially requesting petrol. Upon refusal, the assailants attacked, pushing the men into the canal and assaulting the women.

The attackers fled, stealing mobile phones and Rs 9,500 in cash. “While we were screaming and crying, the three men left with their motorcycle. Daniel saved Pankaj, who had fallen into the water,” the complaint stated.
