KARACHI: Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, emphasized the need for collaboration between federal and local governments to address the challenges faced by Karachi.
According to a statement by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation. He identified the economic hub’s issues, including plastic bag usage, and highlighted the ongoing efforts to modernize waste management systems and infrastructure.
The mayor announced the introduction of amendments to laws in the next Sindh Cabinet meeting to combat the plastic bag mafia. Modern garbage transfer stations are being built, with projects underway to generate gas and electricity from waste. In District Korangi, 30 mini dumpers and 6 large compactors have been added to enhance solid waste management.
During a ceremony at the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board’s Model Colony Yard, Mayor Wahab underscored the importance of constructive politics over criticism. He acknowledged improvements in the waste system but noted the goal of achieving an ideal system. More vehicles are being deployed for neighborhood garbage collection.
Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad and other officials, including representatives from a Chinese company, attended the event where new garbage collection vehicles were handed over. Mayor Wahab personally inspected the machinery and engaged with solid waste staff.
District Korangi’s significance, due to its population and industrial zone, was highlighted by the mayor. An agreement for garbage collection from the industrial zone is expected to improve cleanliness. Mayor Wahab also discussed the ongoing development of Karachi’s infrastructure, including the opening of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Road, with the completion of adjacent sections expected by December.
Acknowledging delays in the Red Line project, the mayor attributed the setbacks to technical issues, extending completion by two years. The Transport Minister has been directed to address these challenges promptly. Mayor Wahab also announced an increase in the union council budget and introduced a complaint number to address public grievances.
The mayor stressed that the success of these initiatives depends on the combined efforts of the federal government and the public, aiming to improve Karachi’s living conditions and promote development.
