Karachi Initiates Three Projects for Energy Generation from Waste

Karachi, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced the commencement of three projects aimed at generating energy from waste, marking a significant step towards cleaner energy solutions and urban cleanliness in Karachi. This initiative places Sindh as the first province in Pakistan to harness energy from waste.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Mayor Wahab emphasized the importance of these projects during a meeting he presided over. Managing Director of Sindh Solid Waste Management Board Naseemuddin Mirani, Project Director SWIP Zubair Ahmed Channa, officials from Green Waste Energy, Khan Renewable Energy, and Engro Energy, along with other relevant officials, attended the meeting.

The Mayor addressed the representatives of the involved companies, stressing the public’s high expectations and urging the completion of feasibility studies and energy generation processes from waste as swiftly as possible. He expressed dissatisfaction with the presented timelines for the project’s completion, instructing the companies to revise their schedules and provide an updated briefing within a week, detailing phased completion dates.

Green Waste Energy is set to produce synthetic gas from waste, Khan Renewable Company will generate 45 megawatts of electricity from waste, and Engro Energy Company is working on a Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) project. These companies have been allocated space at the Jam Chakro and Gondpas landfill sites for the project’s execution.

This initiative by the KMC and its partners represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing both environmental and energy challenges in Karachi, setting a precedent for waste-to-energy projects in Pakistan.
