Islamabad: The governments of Pakistan and Japan signed a comprehensive grant agreement to enhance flood protection infrastructure along the Indus River in Sindh Province. The project, backed by a JPY 2.58 billion grant from Japan, aims to fortify the Old Abad Bund in Larkana, significantly improving resilience for vulnerable communities in the region.

According to Press Information Department, the Exchange of Notes and Record of Discussion were signed by Muhammad Humair Karim Kidwai, Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and H.E. Mr. AKAMATSU Shuichi, Japan’s Ambassador to Pakistan. The Grant Agreement was signed by Ms. Sabina Qureshi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Mr. Sugawara Takayuki, Senior Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Pakistan.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs expressed gratitude to Japan for its ongoing support and development assistance, highlighting Japan’s role as a key development partner. The Japanese ambassador reiterated his government’s commitment to fostering bilateral cooperation and strengthening friendly ties with Pakistan. Mr. Sugawara Takayuki of JICA praised the efforts of the Pakistani and Sindh governments and confirmed JICA’s dedication to enhancing flood protection in the region.
