Islamabad: Pakistan has expressed concerns over India’s rejection of a recent award by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), emphasizing that the implications extend beyond the current dispute.

According to Radio Pakistan, Tahir Andrabi, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed the issue during a weekly media briefing. Andrabi criticized India for treating international law as a convenience, adhering to it selectively based on its own interests. He stressed that India should not disregard binding treaty obligations and the legal processes it has subscribed to, simply because the outcomes may not be favorable.

Andrabi warned that India’s approach could undermine the sanctity of treaties, erode confidence in established international dispute settlement mechanisms, and set a negative precedent for other regions reliant on shared resources governed by agreed legal frameworks. He described unilateralism in managing cross-boundary water resources as particularly concerning in the sensitive region of South Asia, urging India to comply with treaty obligations and engage constructively with Pakistan.

The Foreign Office Spokesperson also highlighted that the Indian Ministry of External Affairs’ statement rejecting the PCA award does not absolve India from its obligations under the Indus Water Treaty or the arbitration court’s decision. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the treaty and its full implementation, urging India to uphold the treaty in both letter and spirit. Andrabi affirmed that Pakistan would take all necessary measures to ensure the court’s decision is fully implemented.
